Family, Graduation, and an Epic Day on the River
Some of life's best memories happen when family comes together to celebrate special milestones. That's exactly what happened when our family gathered in Aspen, Colorado, for our daughter's graduation from Aspen High School.

As a proud father, watching her walk across the stage as Head Girl of Aspen High School was a moment I'll never forget. We were fortunate to have family visiting from Hawaii for the celebration, and we wanted to find an activity that everyone could enjoy together during their stay.

Our Aspen High School Graduate Draped in Leis and Surrounded by Family
Growing up in Hawaii, our family has always loved water sports. Whether it's surfing, paddling, or spending time in the ocean, being on the water is simply part of who we are. So when it came time to plan an adventure in the Roaring Fork Valley, river rafting seemed like the perfect choice.
Discovering Thunder River Adventures
Our rafting experience began with Thunder River Adventures, a local company that made the entire day seamless from start to finish.

Thunder River Adventures Bus at the Inn at Aspen
The team picked us up directly from the the Inn at Aspen hotel, where family was staying and transported us to their staging area, where we were fitted with wetsuits, life jackets, helmets, and all the gear needed for a safe and enjoyable trip.

Geared Up for The River Experience
One thing visitors quickly learn is that Colorado's rivers are much colder than Hawaii's waters. Fortunately, the Thunder River crew ensured everyone was comfortable and prepared before heading to the river.
Rafting Through Aspen, Snowmass, and Basalt
Once we launched onto the Roaring Fork River, the adventure truly began. Our group was divided into two rafts, each guided by experienced professionals. Chris, the owner of Thunder River Adventures, guided our raft and shared valuable paddling tips throughout the journey.

Launching into the River
As someone with years of experience in outrigger canoe paddling in Hawaii, I appreciated the importance of teamwork and timing. Much like paddling an outrigger canoe, rafting requires everyone to work together, paddling in rhythm to navigate the river efficiently.
Paddling Reach and Recovery in Timing
Along the way, we floated past some of the most beautiful scenery in Colorado. The Roaring Fork River winds through breathtaking landscapes, luxury riverfront homes, and picturesque mountain surroundings that showcase why so many people fall in love with Aspen and the surrounding communities.
Wildlife, Local History, and Incredible Views
What made the trip even more memorable was the local knowledge shared by our guides.

Arched Bridge Along the Roaring Fork River
Chris pointed out fascinating landmarks, unique architecture, native wildlife, and even osprey nests perched high above the river. These magnificent birds use elevated locations to monitor the river below while searching for fish.

The rafting experience became more than just an outdoor adventure—it was also an opportunity to learn about the area's ecology, history, and lifestyle.

Riverfront Home in Snowmass
As a real estate professional who has spent more than 26 years helping clients in Hawaii and Aspen, I couldn't help but admire some of the incredible riverfront properties we passed along the way. Many of these homes enjoy direct access to world-class fly fishing and stunning mountain views.
Arriving in Basalt
As we continued downstream, we eventually reached the charming town of Basalt.

Approaching Basalt from the River
The river corridor offers a unique perspective of the town, allowing us to see new residential developments, commercial areas, and some of the community's most scenic waterfront locations.

The weather could not have been better. Although the day began with clouds and the possibility of rain, the sun emerged shortly after we launched, creating ideal rafting conditions.
Taking the Plunge
One of the highlights of the trip came when we pulled over for a short break and had the opportunity to jump into the river.

Our Niece Braving the River
The water was cold, but that didn't stop some of the younger members of our group. My daughter, niece, and guide embraced the challenge and jumped in for a refreshing swim.
Watching their reactions provided plenty of laughs and became one of the most memorable moments of the day.
